Rafah Crossing Sees Low Compliance Amid Israeli Restrictions
In a statement, the office said that between Feb. 2 and Feb. 15, only 811 travelers managed to pass through the crossing in either direction out of a projected 2,800 travelers.
“It said 455 travelers were allowed to depart Gaza, 356 arrived, and 26 others were turned back during the period.”
The statement noted that Israel reopened the Palestinian side of the crossing on Feb. 2 in a very limited manner, after controlling it since May 2024.
The media office added that it had not been informed of the criteria used to determine the total number of travelers scheduled to cross.
Reports from Egyptian and Israeli outlets had previously suggested that roughly 50 Palestinians would cross daily into Gaza and a similar number into Egypt, including patients and their companions, but the office indicated that this plan was not fully realized.
Local estimates suggest that nearly 22,000 wounded and sick residents in Gaza require travel outside the enclave for medical care amid the ongoing collapse of the health system.
Semi-official figures also indicate that about 80,000 Palestinians have registered to return to Gaza, highlighting a persistent refusal of displacement despite widespread destruction in the area.
Since Oct. 10, a US-backed ceasefire agreement has been in effect in Gaza, pausing Israel’s two-year conflict that has claimed over 72,000 lives—mostly women and children—and left more than 171,000 injured since October 2023.
